Catherine Ford was raised in Bloomsbury by her grandmother and mother. When she was a young girl, Ford suffered anxiety due to an obsessional-compulsive condition. Ford's interest in acting began in her early years. She was a part of in the National Youth Theatre. She was admitted to Sylvia Young Theatre School but after one week decided she was not a fit. Ford made an application to the Central School of Speech and Drama and was eventually offered a position on her fourth try. Shaun Dingwall was one of Ford's classmates. He would go on to have regular roles in the shows Pete Tyler and Doctor Who. Ford could graduate in 1993. She already had her TV debut in the 1992 episode Surgical Spirit. She adopted the title Catherine Tate. Tate made appearances on television during the Nineties with shows such as The Bill and Men Behaving Badly. The stage was her main focus and was a member of The Royal Shakespeare Company's season 2000-2001. Tate was first noticed due to her stand-up comedy in 1996.
